A Kingdom of Dreams @ The Velvet Underground – July 25th, 2002

Original Description

Usually Wednesday’s at Velvet Underground (510 Queen W, Toronto) are reserved for DJ Trauma’s Event Horizon set, but on July 24th 2002, Trauma was proud to present a ‘pay what you can’ concert showcasing two up-and-coming local Toronto bands.  The crowd was a diverse one, ranging from tourists and regulars, to other local musicians coming out to support their fellow brethren.  First up was Promonium Jesters.  This heavy-hitting six piece Industrial-metal grind session easily blew the windows out across the street with their relentless mix of pummelling electronics and heavy distorted guitars.  Amidst the rapid-fire synthetic drum-fills, brooding, electronic synths and samples; the monotonous screams of the lead singer  belted out, reminiscent of Ogre in the good ol’ day’s of Skinny Puppy.  After a short intermission, the headliners, A Kingdom of Dreams took the stage; exchanging  the thrash-industrial-flavourings of the former for their dance-inducing blend of masterfully programmed synths, driving beats and the dark quasi-whispering female vox.  Singer’s ethereal vocals deceptively float along with the music raising out of the ambient electronics and kick-beats only occasionally to emphasize the emotional vent that underlies the groups’ momentum.  The three-piece managed to get the small but decent crowd up and on their feet dancing as their music continued to grow with intensity.   Both bands did a great job and were extremely personable before and after their sets.  You can find both of these bands at www.mp3.com.
